Welcome parents and families!
We all know that parents play a vital role in their children’s learning. Many studies have shows that students perform better in school if their parents are involved in their education.
Parents are the primary educators of their children with respect to learning about values, appropriate behaviour, and cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs and traditions, and they are their children’s first role models.
When learning in a French Immersion program, it is important that parents and families discuss and share their reasons for choosing this program, and to identify the value of learning in French. This enables schools, teachers and parents to work together to ensure a strong framework for every child’s education.
How can you help with learning at home if you don’t speak French? Families can do a lot to to help their child become a strong, confident learner without needing to know the language or subject-specific content.
Here are some suggestions…
1. Talk about your child’s school day: Ask what went well? What do you need help with? Help them set goals for the day/week; Check-In about school work: review assignments (along with checklists and success criteria); help set aside and organize time to complete tasks on time; help create checklists and calendars.
2. Literacy development: Celebrate and value French learning; ask your child to share new French vocabulary and expressions (Fun idea: choose a word or phrase of the week and compete with family members to see who can use it the most!); Read and write in multiple languages; Read together; have your child read aloud and summarize a French text; Watch familiar movies in French with subtitles; access public libraries and online French reading resources to enable daily reading in French.
3. Help develop strong learning skills, work habits, and strategies to overcome challenges.
Help your child to identify their strengths and areas for improvement; discuss strategies to help them overcome challenges and build resilience; help develop and practice healthy and positive mindset and learning attitudes.
